Minutes from Youth Services Meeting 11/12/06 @ PaLA Conference, Pittsburgh, PA

This is a rough draft of the Minutes! As you will read, I need a little help remembering some names, for this I apologize!

Please email me: kalchthaleri@einetwork.net with any changes, additions, subtractions. I basically wanted to get this online so that while it is fresh in our minds we could see it all and edit it. Thank you all so much! Happy Thanksgiving!

Clio Hathaway, Youth Services Division Chair called the meeting to order at 3:00 PM with 21 people attending.

2005 minutes were read and approved.

Clio thanked everyone for their service this past year. She reported that she has gotten great verbal feedback regarding pre-conference, programs, and poster sessions at this year's conference.

The YS Division welcomed 71 new members this year.

Clio attended the Youth Services Task Force Meeting in April, 2005. She spent a great deal of time working on this year's conference.

Susan Pannebaker reported that the 2007 One Book Every Young Child Kick-off will be on Tuesday, March 20 at the Early Learning Forum in Harrisburg. Dr. Rita Bean from the University of Pittsburgh will be one of the speakers. Invitations will be sent in the middle of February.

Laureen Maloney reported that spring workshops for Summer Reading training will commence February 27 in Hershey. They will be held around the state.

Margie Stern, on behalf o the Youth Services Task Force thanked Commonwealth Libraries for pre-conference. There will be no pre-conference next year as the PaLA Conference will be held at Penn State on a home football game weekend. Susan et. al. are looking into a post-conference.

Paula Gilbert on behalf of the PaLA Public Relations Committee reported that the Early Learning Forum is working with the Office of Child Development in Pittsburgh to study the influence of libraries upon early learning. The final report will be available in March of 2008. This is a wonderful opportunity to see on paper just how much impact libraries have on early learning. We all will be getting an online survey asking what we do for early learners in our library. Please respond so that we all can be part of the feed back process.

Discussion followed about the need for better communication within PaLA and in our division. Lynn (hey Lynn-- I am so sorry! I can't think of your last name! I am very embarrassed! Can you please email me so I can fix this. Dude, I am way sorry!) brough up the idea of having a mentoring system through which new members of the YS Division or new librarians in general can be mentored by others. Kelley Beeson suggested that a "Welcome Packet" for new YS Division members be created. Lynn and Denise Pulgino Stout (thank you so much, Denise!)agreed to work on this.

A blog has been started, the address is palayouthservices.blogspot.com. It wil be updated each week.
