Dine-Out in Lancaster!

Join Youth Services Division members for dinner in the Publisher's Room at The Pressroom Restaurant before the "wild rumpus begins!" Have a great dinner and meet up with old friends and make new ones. The Publisher's Room is a private room that can accommodate up to 80 people. If we have more than 25 people attending we have to choose a menu with specific selections or have a buffet. The invitation is on YSD Facebook. Let me know if you are coming.

Best Practices Awards

The PaLA PR committee met in State College. At the meeting we discussed the lack of funding available for the Best Practices Awards luncheon and awards presentationat the early Learnign Forum in April. After much discussion that included several of the members of the committee ( Margie and Paula, Georgene, Jeanne, Susan Pannebaker and Laureen Maloney (Chair Youth Services)) the group decided to move the awards to the 2011 PALA conference. There will be no Best Practices Awards for Spring 2011. We also decided the Youth Services Division will now be in charge of the application and awards process. Since there is no money available to pay PPO&S to coordinate the application process and event the group decided it would be best to scale down the number of awards and the event. The two committee’s will be working together to facilitate the awards process for the 2011 conference. The awards will be presented in a session at the PaLA conference in Fall 2011. We will be making some changes and adding new ages categories. We will discusss the plans at the membership meeting at PaLA. Sometimes out of necessity, good changes happen.

Ultimate Tween Experience!

Elizabeth Davis and I had the pleasure of putting together and giving a workshop for NE chapter. We entitled it "The Ultimate Tween Experience". The Children's Library in Scranton is unique in that it serves children from babies to about twelve years old. We also have limited space where we can do programs in private. Most of our programs are conducted on the floor where it is open with the public. Our problems occur when we are doing programs for older kids such as tweens and parents insist their 3 years will be OK participating with the older kids. That may be all well and good, but 13 year olds will not come back to a program for fear there will be too many little kids. So we tried to make the programs "difficult" and "dangerous" so parents of toddlers wouldn't think they were appropriate for their youngsters. Like our Danger Club! The little girl above was testing her taste buds. It works pretty well.

Will Hillenbrand - What a Treasure!

Will Hillenbrand was wonderful! As someone said to me, "Mr. Rogers in a suit jacket."
He arrived for his 6:30 PM program at 4:30 in the afternoon. As he set up, we talked. Anyone who came in he spoke with. He encouraged one of the Children's staff members, who is wonderfully artistic, to go to Marywood to sit on some of their classes.Will gave one-on-one art lessons and encouragement to a future book illustrator. She is only 8. He had the children entranced! We had 3 programs with a total of almost 300 adults and children and everyone left happy. We set up interactive learning stations in our lobby. We used under-the-bed storage bins for our sandboxes where children could dig for bugs. When not in use, we put the covers on. The children learned about the concepts of over, under, and through with our "mole house", tunnel, and balance beam. Our library was filled with little miners! How appropriate for our coal mining region.

The Library ... wiring brains every day!

Dr. Jill Stamm was the keynote speaker at the Best Practices in Early Learning luncheon on April 14. Her presentation was based on years of research in early brain development after her first daughter was born prematurely at five months. Babies this early don't usually survive but Dr. Stamm's daughter did with a lot of help. As her daughter was growing, Dr. Stamm heard a lot of nevers. She is never going to talk, never walk, never read. Dr. Stamm never gave up! As a fifth grade teacher, she knew what to do. She introduced concepts to her daughter and consistently reintroduced them until her daughter was able to grasp them as best she could. As a result of working with her daughter, Dr. Stamm began to investigate the way a child's brain develops and how we can nurture and stimulate a baby's developing mind.
Her book, Bright from the Start will help you separate the myths about early brain development form the facts. It will show you simple but effective ways to nurture a babies growing mind. And more importantly, it's never to late to start.

The book provides useful ideas for activities for babies and toddlers which include brief explanations of the purpose of the activity and the science behind it. Dr. Stamm's presentation and book validates what we are doing in our programs with language, literacy, modeling and play with a purpose. That we as libraries play an important role in brain development. My new slogan for the library is “Wiring brains every day.”

One of the most interesting chapters is Chapter 5 Screen Time: When Baby Meets Modern Life. It confirmed what I have observed over the past 15 years. Children's attention spans are shorter and kids are more easily distracted with the introduction of video, computers, gaming systems and now hand held devices. A child's brain gets used to a short attention so it gets wired that way. All these devices contribute to a child's brain being trained to scan and shift rather that to pay attention. It's stop and go and on to something new.
I have heard many of the concepts Dr. Stamm has spoken about in her book. I use many of the reasons and explanations with parents in my programs. But I have been around a long time. Bright from the Start would be an excellent resource for those who do infant toddler programs but have limited knowledge of brain development or need an authority to support why we design our programs for young children the way we do. It also acts a guide to help structure infant toddler programs more appropriately and with intent.
As always, my neural pathways are still expanding!

Funny How Things Change and the Dark Side

Hi All,
I don't get much time to read so when the CWF awards nominees are announced I read them.
I actually pretended to be asleep when I heard my family calling me for dinner one night. They couldn't find me and thought I went outside to sit on own my personal Stonehenge rock! I was in the living room and I had a book to finish! I was nearing the end of Funny How Things Change by Melissa Wyatt . The story brought out several issues, one of which was ecological and environmental, mountain topping, the destruction of mountains for the sake of easier, cheaper coal mining. It brought to mind our current situation here in NE PA with the Marcellus Shale drilling. I know of families whose groundwater is now contaminated. Families need the money so they make decisions that may have negative consequences. Consequences that seventeen year old Remy comes to understand. He is faced with decisions: does he stay in his dying West Virginia town where his family settled 160 years earlier or go with his girl friend Lisa to Pennsylvania? Does he allow his father to sell the family mountain to mining company so that Remy has money to go to PA? After he meets a young artist and starts to see his town through her eyes, he makes his decision.

The other book I read non-stop was Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey. I have read all the Twilight books and was always left with a feeling of anxiety and annoyance. The yin and yang of Bella and Edward's relationship. Not a comfortable feeling. I had the Dark Side home for a week before I was "allowed" to read it. My 12 year old daughter Maggie claimed it as hers. She read it twice I read it once. I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun read with all the teenage angst and hormones, human and vampire. Lucius is Jessica's Henry Higgins. Can he transform Jessica from a Pa farm girl who mucks out stalls to a Romanian vampire princess? Maggie and I thought Lucius' letters to his uncle in Roumania were well written and funny in a sarcastic way. A royal vampire's impressions of teenage life in rural PA. Maggie took the book back for a third read and now wants her own copy. Maggie also wondered if Beth's last name was her real name. It looks so much like "fantasy".

Crafty Sites

Not being a crafty person, I found that these sites have a lot to offer. I was searching for the perfect dryer lint play dough. I found it, made it, and it was the most disgusting thing I have ever made! Luckily I tried it out at home before making at the library. It was cold, slimy and had pet hair in it. I couldn't in good conscience allow the the library kids to make it! My daughter said it looked like, "cat yaak." So we made colorful, smelly, sparkly, Kool-Aid dough! This site has it all. Hi Everyone,
Now that the snows of winter have ended, the roads are clear and the smell of spring is in the air , we are ready for new challenges ... Fun ones like reading the Carolyn Field nominees. "There were many excellent books this year and the committee members engaged in a long deliberation to compile this list. 2010 Grammy for Best Children's Musical Album

The Grammy Award show was great this year with Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Lady Gaga but my favorite part is the part not ever shown, the Grammy Award for the best children's album. There were some really great performers up for a Grammy this year. Ziggy Marley, Cathy & Marcy and my personal favorites that I use all the time, Greg & Steve. It is always gratifying when the artists are actually children's performing artists, not cross-overs who are just trying to capitalize on the explosion of music for children.

Carolyn W. Field Award

The Carolyn W. Field Award was established in 1983 by the Youth Services Division of the Pennsylvania Library Association. A Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, Carolyn Wicker Field retired in 1983 from the Free Library of Philadelphia where she served as Coordinator of Work with Children for 30 years. Each year the Youth Services Division presents this award, which recognizes the best books for young people by a Pennsylvania author or illustrator.
The Carolyn Field committee solicits books from publishers, the committee reviews the books, and then makes a final selection of 5. Over the years there has been a wide variety of books selected, from picture books to young teen, fiction to non-fiction. A good book is a good book! The chosen selections are sent out to Youth Services Division members who then vote for their choice.

The 2009 winner was:Susan Campbell Bartoletti, for The Boy Who Dared .

In October, 1942, seventeen-year-old Helmuth Hubener, imprisoned for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets, recalls his past life and how he came to dedicate himself to bring the truth about Hitler and the war to the German people.

The 2010 committee is currently working to select 5 books for nomination for the award. The committee will be announcing the nominated titles in February.

New Year , New Challenges!

My name Laureen Maloney and want to introduce myself and two other members of the YS division, Mary Glendening , vice-chair, from Narbeth Community Library and Patte Kelley, secretary/treasurer from Carnegie Library. As the new board members, we have an awesome responsibility. This initial communication is the hardest to make. After this it will be easier. As I tell my staff, "baby steps". One of the reasons I haven't sent anything out until now is that I am going through "the binder". I need to understand how the division functions and it's role and responsibilities in PalA. I'm beginning to understand!

I recognize we are are all feeling overwhelmed at our libraries with staff and budget reductions, but I hope we can over come the challenges to do our best and continue providing quality services to our patrons. Together we can achieve great things and I ask your help in keeping the Youth Services Division a vital part of PaLA.

Again, PaLA will distribute the Best Practices in Early Learning booklets featuring the Best Practices award winners and their library programs at the PaLA Early Learning Forum and Best Practices Awards luncheon on April 14 in Harrisburg. In order to have those booklets ready for distribution at that event, the deadline for applications is October 30.

This year’s awards program again includes a category for innovative programs conducted in conjunction with the One Book, Every Young Child program utilizing the selected 2009 book, If You Were A Penguin.

Attendees at the Early Learning Forum and Best Practices Awards luncheon will have an opportunity to learn from and meet Jane and Will Hillenbrand, the author and illustrator of the 2010 One Book, Every Young Child selection, What a Treasure. Other leaders in the field of early learning also will be speaking. All Best Practices Award winners will receive their awards from the Hillenbrands, and their stories will be part of the Best Practices in Early Learning booklet distributed that day and shared with elected officials and policy-makers. You do not have to be an award winner to attend this FREE day of learning and fun and may bring an unlimited number of guests such as library staff, board members, major funders, etc.

Check Up for Young Readers

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pennsylvania Association of Family Physicians and the Pennsylvania Library Association have formed a collaboration to promote the new statewide program, Checkup for Young Readers. In this program, pediatricians and other health care providers partner with local libraries to encourage parents to share books with their preschoolers.

From Green Sign to Green Sign, by Katherine Ayers

A particular logo pops up as you travel across Pennsylvania—a green sign with a stylized profile of a person reading along with the word LIBRARY. These green signs appear in large towns and small, in cities and rural counties, all pointing in the direction of books.
For nearly six weeks this spring I traveled Pennsylvania, visiting these public libraries. As the author of the 2008 Pennsylvania One Book (Every Young Child), I hit the road to promote early childhood literacy from Pittsburgh to Susquehanna, from Philadelphia to Greencastle, and numerous points in between.
Because I was working with young children (70+ events with children, 5 with teachers and librarians) I met many children’s librarians. These folks were kind, extremely cheerful, and possessed great senses of humor. As children entered, the librarians gave them a wide smile and said, “Hello friends.” That’s all you have to do to become a friend, just walk in the door. These days, there is no shushing. Children’s learning can be noisy and that’s just fine. Toddlers darted about. Infants bounced on laps. Sometimes they fussed but that was okay. Story hour is about the children, after all.
Or is it? In one library, while the children were having a snack after their story, the mothers were socializing intensively. But of course—it was the start of spring, and they’d been cooped up indoors with small children for months. Story hour provided intellectual stimulation for the children, but also a social support network for their mothers.
And across the state, libraries have been stretching their missions in an attempt to become centers of community. New library buildings crop up next to municipal buildings, in the midst of town playing fields, in the midst of the action. You want a tax form? No problem. Need to use a computer? Sign up here. Nationwide, libraries are developing Family Places, programs that reach out to parents with children three and under to provide information and support about all aspects of childhood from child health to typical patterns of growth and emotional development to early literacy activities.
On my own trip, I was greeted effusively in every town, every county. In one library, the community room was soon to undergo reconstruction. So on their own time, the librarians painted huge vegetables on all four walls. (My book, Up, Down, and Around is about how veggies grow.) Early in the tour, 160 children arrived for the story and songs dressed as veggies, wearing colorful tee shirts and amazing headgear—green beans dangling from vines or a green foam visor “planted” with three bright beets. Later, a librarian and teachers collaborated so that 300 kindergarteners sang my story as a song. (Twice! Once in the morning , and again in the afternoon.) Another librarian had four-year-olds decorate a tee shirt with veggies as a gift. Still another set up a farmers’ market outside the entrance. By noon, some of her display carrots had been nibbled. In seventy different events, there were seventy different stories to tell—all filled with a joyful spirit—the delight of words and stories and learning.
Children respond to this generosity—they bloom, share opinions, get excited about books and ideas. “I weally, weally wove wettuce,” one little boy confided after hearing my book. Another girl informed the room that “My sister lives with me!” I led a small group, spinning in and around the children’s room bookshelves, pretending to be pumpkin vines, tangling up the books. “This is so fun, I want to keep doing this,” said a kindergarten boy. I agree. I want him to keep tangling with books for the rest of his life. Another child, whose thoughts were stimulated by a story and discussion, asked hard, interesting questions: “Why do seeds grow?” (Not how, which I could answer.) And then, “Why don’t we grow like plants do?” Such a question had never occurred to me. I checked the bottoms of my feet for roots.
As I traveled the state, the children invigorated my spirits. Yes, I got tired of the turnpike, but I only got lost twice and ate in some fine and funky restaurants. And although I was away from home, away from my family and usual companions, I was rarely lonely. Several governors ago, the state had a promotional campaign. Its motto: You have a friend in Pennsylvania. After traveling for six weeks, from green sign to green sign, I can testify to the truth of that statement. We all have a friend in Pennsylvania—she is the librarian.

I have never been so filled with ideas! The meetings and workshops that I have had the privilege to go to over the past 2 weeks have been astounding and inspiring.

PaLA Leadership Orientation: Every year, incoming and outgoing chairs of PaLA's divisions, committees and round tables gather together to get inspired on the best way to lead others towards this fine organization. What are the missions of our prospective areas? What haven't we tried yet to get new members interested in PaLA? What do we need to do to keep members involved in PaLA? How can I get my division inspired to do new things and be more vital to the organization? I have some new ideas inspired by this gathering that I would love to discuss with all of you at our annual meeting during the PaLA Conference on Monday, November 10, at 8 am. I promise that, with enough coffee and attendees, I will try my best to inspire you to get involved along with me.

Family Place Retreat: This was awesome! On the first day, we learned about how Norfolk, Virginia libraries went above and beyond the Family Place Library concept to redesign their branches to have Kidzones - inviting and spacious areas for play and imagination to help kids grow and learn. The second speaker was from the Vermont Center for the Book and has designed programs and kits for us to use on Science and Math concepts. Each Family Place Library got a kit of 6 of these awesome kits to bring back and make use of in many fun and creative ways. We played with blocks to make a map of the room. How many meetings let you play with blocks?

Each District also received more materials to share to make the concepts more well rounded. I already have my entire next year planned out thanks to this inspiring talk and these kits. Make discovery centers for families to play with science and math based objects like tangram puzzles and other fun stuff.

Between the science and math kits and talking about the upcoming art and drama based summer reading club theme (Be Creative @ Your Library: http://www.cslpreads.org/2009/cp09.htm), I began to wonder just what was left of a school curriculum we were not covering at my own library. We use the word "Explorers" a lot in naming our programs. We have Sensory Explorers - using the five senses in new ways; Fitness Explorers: using our bodies and getting in shape. The new kits will help us develop Science Explorers and Math Explorers. Summer Reading Club will bring Art Explorers and Drama Explorers. We explored the world and cultures via Passports to the World this past year. What was left? HISTORY! We'll do a monthly program on varying kinds of history!

As you can see, the possibilities can be endless once the kernal of an idea gets me going. I hope that many of you will be able to join us at this fall's PaLA Conference to get inspired at the wonderful selection of workshops and sessions we are offering this year. Family Place Libraries Save the Date!

Please mark September 24 and 25 for the 2008 State-wide Family Place program. We will begin around 1 on Wednesday afternoon and finish with lunch on Thursday. The tentative agenda is

Wednesday afternoon join Norm Maas, Director of the Norfolk, VA Library and one of his children's librarians. They will be talking about the Kids Zones they have created in their library branches and how Family Place has helped them leverage money and clout in the early childhood arena. This would be a good program for directors to attend. The second half of the afternoon will be a make and take program for parent programs and a time for sharing.

Thursday morning join Sally Anderson, Executive Director of the Vermont Center for the Book. She will be doing a three hour training on What's the Big Idea? kits for libraries and for take home. Each Family Place Library will have access to at least one of the full librarian kits (probably going to be distributed on a county basis). Each FP library that attends the program will receive one of at least 6 of the take home kits. For more information on this program visit http://bigidea.mothergooseprograms.org/ .

I will reimburse mileage for one vehicle and provide one double room per per FP library. Breakfast and lunch on Thursday will be provided. Dinner Wednesday night will be on your own. The program will be held at the Grantville Holiday Inn.

Fundraising idea

Dear Youth Services Division Members,

In the past, people have asked about how they can be more involved in Youth Services Division. I also remember that we as a division have a hard time raising money for things like training and workshops – which is at the core of our division mission. So, I contemplated what we can all do together to solve these two issues and I came up with what I think is a really fun idea: a silent auction.

How you can be involved: think up something to donate, such as a “program in a box;” “a mini vacation in a bag;” or something, anything, that you think that will be useful or fun for a fellow librarian (remember those non-youth services folks too!). Imagination and creativity are the only limits. Package it up in a creative way that will entice someone to bid on your donation, write up a brief description and bring it with you to the PaLA Convention in November.

We will set up all of the donated items in the PaLA bookstore with bidding sheets. As folks peruse the store, they can write their bids on the sheets. At the end of the allotted time, we shall announce the winners and collect the bids – all for the Youth Services Division.

If you cannot attend the convention, but still wish to contribute, that’s great! Send items to: Denise Pulgino Stout, Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library, 1001 Powell Street, Norristown PA 19401 and I will bring it to the convention for you.

Please email back to me if you are interested in participating in this fun project. We need your contact information and the approximate idea behind your donation. I know that many of you are incredibly creative and can come up with some cool ideas that others will be interested in bidding on. I also know that your generosity is endless and we youth services folks can gather together to help our organization do some great things if we come together – while having a little fun along the way!

If you are interested in helping to set up the auction, I can use your help. Just let me know via email and you’re volunteered.

The Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) is currently accepting program proposals for the PaLA Annual Conference, to be held November 9 – 12, 2008 at the Valley Forge Convention Center/Scanticon Hotel in King of Prussia. The 2008 Conference Committee, led by Carrie Turner, Director, Cheltenham Township Library System, is hard at work planning another great conference, which will offer more than 50 sessions, exhibits, meal events, tours, receptions, and more!

Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library

Some terrific things are happening at Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library:

We are getting ready to start a new TAG and make a new area for teens. We went to the workshop in the fall and won a really cool table which we have installed two laptops on. We're excited about it.

I have another resource I thought was important. I found a website that gives out free seeds ( well, almost free, you have to pay shpg./handling charges). It is called the America The Beautiful Fund and they will send packets of seeds with a request letter from your organization. We sent one last week so children could get a packet of seeds with their Up, Down, All Around book at our library events.

Just thought you might want to share with others and I thought this was a cool place to do it.

I wanted to thank everyone who contributed suggestions for future summer reading slogans and themes. I have forwarded them to the Collaborative. The Collaborative meets the end of April and I will let you know in May the slogan for 2010 and the theme for 2011.

I have a couple of other things I would like to share:

This spring there will be four workshops being held in the East on the Mother Goose on the Loose program by the creator of the book of the same title Betsy Diamont Cohen. The workshops will be held in libraries in York on April 28, State College on April 29, Wilkes-Barre on April 30 and Haverford on May 1. Registration forms will come out in early March. Only forty people will be able to attend each session due to limited space in the libraries. Part of the program will be Betsy doing a session of the program with a group of local preschoolers.

For those of you who do not belong to the Association for Library Service to Children and don’t receive Children and Libraries you may want to go on POWER Library’s Professional Development Collection database and find the Winter 07 issue of the journal. This issue focuses entirely on children with special needs. The first article is a great bibliography by an education professor on books that show children with particular disabilities. It lists over 300 titles on everything from autism to ADD. The author feels it is very important that children be able to see themselves in books. To get to a specific issue click publications then type the title of the journal in the browse box. Click on the title when it appears and then click on 2007 to open that year and then click on winter and the entire issue will appear. This is a great way to read through current issues of not only Children and Libraries, but also Horn Book, School Library Journal and YALSA’s journal.

It has been a long time since my last post and I have a lot to cover!

First of all, a million thank yous to the Conference Committee and all of the presenters at the 2007 Annual Conference. Speaking for myself, and after looking over the conference evaluations, it was an incredible success and an informative and entertaining time for all!

At the Youth Services Division Business meeting, I had stated that Mary Maxson will be unable to take on her position as Chair of the Youth Services Division of PaLA. At the meeting I had stated that I would stay on as Chair and work closely with Vice-Chair Denise Pulgino-Stout for 2008.

After reflecting on this wonderful organization, however, and talking with Denise, I realized that there is no way I would be able to do another term justice. Denise has agreed to take on the role as Chair for 2008, I will serve as Vice Chair and then, during election time, we will elect a new Chair and new Vice-Chair.

Many thanks to all of you who passed along the names of individuals for the Carolyn Field Committee and for possible candidiates for YSD officers next year. Many thanks also for the wonderful support you all have given as I have tried to serve this organization well. It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my library career, as I have had the opportunity to work with all of you, very gracious and gifted people.

This week I will be attending the PaLA Leadership Conference and look forward to seeing some of you and passing the torch to Denise!

Montgomery-Co./Norristown Workshop

Check out the pictures from our latest workshop at Montgomery Co.- Norristown Library last Friday. The middle picture is a great idea-- Denise Pulgino-Stout, Head of Children's Services. She puts all of her usual songs on a permanent project board so that the parents know what songs will be sung and can sing along. It also goes along with her on outreach visits. The bottom picture is the book drop in the children's department. Very cool!

Denise has also agreed to run for vice chair of YSD! Your ballots will be coming soon! Also, Susan McCellan, Director of Avalon Public Library will run for Sec/Treasurer. It is not too late to get your name on the ballot! Please email me if you want to participate in this way.

It has been a busy and rewarding first quarter for the Youth Services Division. With the development of a weekly- updated blog, we seek to stay in communication more frequently and with greater ease. The Division blog address is: http:palayouthservices.blogspot.com.

Spring Continuing Education Workshops for Youth Services Professionals were planned for five locations across the commonwealth. At this time, two have taken place, the first in Shaler, the second in Johnstown. Three others will be held in May: Rymersburg, Norristown and Williamsport. Feedback from the first two workshops has been extremely positive and a full report will be made when the workshops conclude. We were very thankful to have received a $1,000 donation from Pittsburgh businessman, David W. Hunter, to help offset the costs for the workshop.

Shawn Sipe, current Chair of the Carolyn W. Field Award Committee, has announced the nominees for this year. Ballots will be mailed this summer. Dolores Colarosa, Head of Youth Services, Brentwood Public Library, has been appointed the Carolyn W. Field Award Chair for 2008 and has selected her committee. With the help of Shawn and Dolores, a new e-toolkit has been created for the future Chairs and members of the CWF Committee which should make this important job a bit easier.

Gratitude is deeply expressed to Ellen Wharton and Kim Snyder for all of their constant help and to all of the YSD members who have contributed to articles, volunteered to host a workshop or present, submitted proposals for the annual conference, contributed to the blog, among other things.

My only regret is that there are only eight more months left to this term!

Hello All,

Just got back from the Pennsylvania School Librarians' Assocation Conference in Hershey. I feel like I'm writing the Monday morning Seen column in the local paper!

Spotted were Karen Payonk, Children's Librarian and Assistant Director of Lititz Public Library, and Kim Synder, Assistant for Meetings and Finance at the Pennsylvania Library Association and Lynn Moses, from PDE, Division of School Library Services.

Who else went? What did you think?

I talked to a lot of school librarians during the conference (imagine that!) and thought it might be a good idea to do article for the newletter about school library and public library cooperation. Sooooooooo please send me your stories! or have your school librarian send them to me. I know that at Bethel Park we couldn't get along without our school librarians and are so grateful to them for letting us in their buildings and for partnering with us for so many programs each month. Share your successes, or challenges with us!

If anyone is interested in the use of blogs and wikis, and the concetps of Library 2.0, School Library 2.0, check out the blog that I and one of the school librarians in the Bethel Park School District created for PSLA. Imagination Library

Does anyone participate in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program? Recently a patron told me about her mother, a librarian in another state, whose library participates in this program. The deal is that a child receives a free book from the Imagination Library every month, each year from birth until they are five years old. The cost of the program comes out to $27 per child, per year. I googled Pennsylvania and Imagination Library and found that Hanover, PA participates. I was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with this program and thinking about ways in which we could maybe participate on a state-wide level. Has an amazing library system! Our second workshop took place on Friday at the Cambria County Library in downtown Johnstown. District Consultant, Mary Lou Repsher and Director Lyn Meek were wonderful hosts and we are so thankful for their hospitality. When you find yourself in Johnstown, please check out the library. For you children's librarians, I am sure you will find yourselves green with envy when you see the Children's Department-- I know I was!

Cambria County Library will be hosting what has become a very popular fund raiser on April 20- a Friday evening. It is called A Little Night Music @ the Library and it features a different style of music on each of the Library's three floors. See their website for more information. I have heard a great many wonderful things about this evening, but have yet to make it. Go if you can!

I also wanted to thank the Shaler North Hills Library for hosting our March 23 workshop. This library is near and dear to my heart because I have been working there for 20 years and I still have my key! It seems like bragging about my own family, but I must thank Shaler's dynamic and creative director, Sharon McRae and the whole staff for allowing us to hold our first workshop in Shaler. The Shaler Library will celebrate National Jazz Month on Monday, April 16 at their 3rd Annual Jazz Extravaganza featuring the jazz ensembles from Shaler Area High School, CAPA High School, and other area schools. Check it out here!

In response to the request for information about your teen and children's writing groups a great many samples and stories and descriptions have been sent! Thank you all so much for this! Many of you asked for more time to send pictures and samples and so what we'll do is- there will be an article in May's newsletter about writing groups in general, with the teaser that next month we will feature ideas from your libraries. I want to make sure I get everyone's input for this article because of the great response, so if you haven't had a chance to send your info in, please do and it will be included in the June issue!

Feedback surveys for the Shaler and Johnstown workshops will be coming to you via Survey Monkey emails-- Kim Synder from PaLA has graciously allowed me to use this program and so I will be emailing them this week. Your feedback is appreciated!

Busy Week!

Tomorrow is the Best Practices Award Luncheon in Harrisburg! I hope all of you are going to be there! I am SERIOUSLY bummed, as I will not be able to attend...this is probably TMI, but I ended up with a kidney infection and can't make the trip. :-(. But it will be an amazing day and a time to celebrate all of the wonderful things that PA Libraries are doing-- all of the wonder things that YOU are doing, that is!

Friday is the first of the Spring Continuing Education Workshops. We have great group of folks signed up for this workshop in Shaler. If by some chance you are still thinking about going--- email me kalchthaleri@einetwork.net before noon on Thursday and just bring your check and your registration form on Friday. But please email me just so I can make food arrangements for you!

I am getting a great response regarding the writing groups you are doing and look forward to including that in the Bulletin article in May. I have also discovered that in SEVERAL places on the YSD blog I have spelled Bulletin wrong. This is very embarrassing, but is part of my history...for 7 years I was a church pastor it was even more necessary to spell bulletin correctly, but sadly I never learned.

Hello all,

Don't miss Kathy Maron-Woods' (Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh) great intergenerational programming idea on the Intergenerational Info Site. There you will also find links sent from Claudia Koenig of Commonwealth Libraries.

For the May or June issue I would like to feature any writing groups that you have in your library (for children or teens). Do you have your own group? Do you publish a newsletter? Fiction? Poetry? Online? In print? Do you have an author's contest? Send away! And your information will be included in the May or June issue of the Bulliten! Spend student samples, pictures, whatever you have!

All of the submissions that I received for PaLA program proposals were sent in to the Program Committee. They will make the ultimate decisions and I don't envy them! The ones that I saw were fantastic and I know this conference is going to be awesome!

Lots of Stuff!

First of all, I hope that you are keeping warm! Currently in Pittsburgh, it is 2 degrees. Joy!

Second-- a reminder from an email Paula Gilbert sent out about the Early Learning Forum and Best Practices Awards Lunch - MARCH 21 at the Harrisburg Hilton from 9 AM - 3 PM. Don't miss out!

Third-- Mary Morgan Smith, Head of Children's Services at Northland Library recently shared a local dry cleaner approached her last summer about donating 2 new bikes to give away for Summer Reading prizes. Needless to say these were a HUGE draw, a big hit! In talking with the dry cleaner, Mary found out that dry cleaners are a very generous group and want to give back to the community. Mary's particular dry cleaner got the bike idea from another dry cleaner in Boston. She has also been in touch with other dry cleaners in PA and is encouraging them to contact their local libraries to see what they can donate for SRC. (who knows, one of us may get a call!) Does anyone else have any other dry cleaner stories? Is this a project that we could organize state wide? Let me know what you know and/or think! kalchthaleri@einetwork.net.

Fourth-- Don't forget about the Spring Cont Education Workshops. We are so excited to have just gotten word that Pittsburgh businessman David W. Hunter will helping to refray the costs of the workshops. Many thanks to Mr. Hunter for his generosity toward this endeavor. And many, many thanks to our presenters and wonderful host libraries! I will be turning the registration flyer in to Ellen at PaLA this week and they will be mailed to your soon. But save the dates now! Thank you to all of you who sent emails and questions about the workshops. It should be a great experience for all!

Fifth-- PaLA Program Proposals, please (that's a lot of alliteration) email them to kalchthaleri@einetwork.net by Feb. 23 so that they can be "sponsored" by the YS Division. Many wonderful proposals have been received already, please, keep them coming! If you sent a proposal but did not receive an email from me in response, please send it again, as the SPAM filter is quite strong!

And sixth and last--just finished the March PaLA newsletter article which will share all of YOUR amazing programming ideas. Look here next week though for even more information and photos. School-Age Programming Made Simple
Once a child outgrows preschool and kindergarten storytimes, what kinds of programming will keep them coming to the library? Walk way with ready-to-go programs for those in 1-5 grades.

CSI @ Your Library
A hands-on mystery for YOU to solve using actual investigative techniques. This teen-tested program is easly and cheaply duplicated in your library. We will give you all you need to host your own Crime Scene Investigation. This program can be easily adapted for younger children and/or families. You will leave this session with all you need to host your own night of intrigue.

Workshop registration and coffee will begin at 8:30 AM at each of the locations, with the first session beginning at 9:00 AM. Workshops will end at 3:00 PM.*

Intergenerational programming

I was blown away by the wonderful response to my email on the PAYOUTH list about intergenerational programming. Thank you SO MUCH for all of your emails and photos and your willingness to share. I will incorporate them in an article for the PaLA newsletter and send in all the photos that were sent to me, I guess Ann the editor, will pick and choose, but I am going to post all of your photos and info here on the blog as well. There is so much creativity out there and you are all doing such incredible things! Thank you so much for taking the time to send them to me.

If you sent me an email and I didn't respond, it means that it went to my spam folder or is still floating out there in cyber-land! Please send again or post about it on here! I replied to all of the emails I got and so if you didn't get an email back, then I am so sorry but it got lost somewhere in the web!

I spoke with all of the spring workshop presenters and have complied the dates of their collective availability. Today and tomorrow I will be emailing the libraries who offered to host and so the dates should be out soon!

Mid-Week Update

Too many things to post about this week and I was worried I would forget by next Monday!

Also, BIG thanks to Denise Pulgino Stout from Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library. She offered her library as an additional site for the spring workshop! She has also done a wonderful job working up a YSD website which should be up and running soon. Thank you so much, Denise!

FYI for future CWF chairs- thanks to Shawn Sipe (2007 Chair) and Nancy McLaughlin I believe we will have a list of publishers in e-format for coming years. Both have complied lengthy lists and I will combine them. Dolores Colarosa (2008 Chair) has begun contacting publishers and she will be able to make additions and changes to the list as well to assure that it is updated. We can keep in a members-only section here on the blog/website. Thank you so much Shawn, Nancy and Dolores. This will make things so much easier for future chairs! Also, thanks again to all who have been writing and sharing their interest in serving on the CWF committee. This will also make things easier in the future.

Continuing Education Workshops and SRC

By next week I will have finalized workshop topics with the presenters and will be able to post the topics on Monday, January 22! I'm still looking for host sites in the middle of the state and in the north east. Please let me know if you can share your library or recommend a library!

Lehigh Valley Storytelling Festival

Wanted to post this information about the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Festival. It came through on the PA Youth list yesterday.
Dear Friends,
The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Festival has been moved, both in date and place, to March 30, 31 and April 1, and to NCC's Southside Campus on 3rd Street in Bethlehem as well as at Lehigh University and at Godfrey Daniels. We are expanding!

The presenter for this year's Educator's workshop is Bill Harley!!! Yes, that's right THE Bill Harley of CD and picture book fame, storyteller and songwriter, extraordinaire.
I have attached the flyer and application for this event. It will be held on March 30th (Friday) at NCC's Southside Campus.

This week I'd like to give an update on the 2008 Carolyn Field Committee.
The list of publishers has been cleaned up and updated - just finished last week! Many thanks to Nancy McLaughlin from the Bethel Park Library for checking all of the publishers and their current addresses, phone numbers, etc. This will help in the future.

If you have served on the Carolyn Field Committee in the past, would you please send me an email: kalchthaleri@einetwork.net or post your name on here? I would like to keep a list of those who have served. Also to help out the future Field Chairs, please send me an email if you would like to serve on the committee in the future.

The 2008 Chair is Dolores Colarosa, Head of Youth Services at Brentwood Library. Serving with her on the committee are: Clio Hathaway, Martin Library; Andrea Mandel, Marple Public Library; Karen Payonk, Lititz Public Library; Nell Redhage, Chester County Library.

More on Spring Workshops

Thanks to even more of you who wrote offering to host a spring workshop at your library! Still looking to fill some geographic holes so please let me know if you are still interested and able!

I emailed Kim Snyder and got some more information about what it would take to get this all up and running and it looks great. It may even help with this issue of fundraising, depending on how many register for the workshop (non-PaLA members would pay a bit more, Kim suggested).

Those who have volunteered to present at the workshop will be fully reimbursed for travel and overnight (when needed) expenses. If you are still thinking about volunteering to present, just let me know!

I received offers from Linell Mankey, Director of Chartiers-Houston Library, Penny Talbert, Community Relations Coordinator at Ephrata Public Library and Dolores Colarosa, Head of Children's Services at Brentwood Public Library to host a spring cont. ed. workshop. If anyone else is interested in hosting, please email me, I hope to set up workshops so that easy travel is possible. Possible topics for the workshops include a C.S.I. mystery that attendees will participate in and then be able to set up at their own libraries, a homeschooling workshop that was presented at PLA in Boston this past spring and teen programming on a shoe-string budget.

Thank you also to the folks who have sent in Bios. Check the Links list to see them and look for more, as many of you wrote and said your bio is forthcoming. No need for a picture if you don't have one available or if you would rather not post one.

The workshop in Gettysburg was a wonderful introduction to PaLA. Janice Trapp, incoming PaLA President said that a couple of the goals for this year will be to increase communication and membership. She encouraged all of us to ask all of the people that we know if they are members of PaLA. If they aren't, then we should encourage them to join.

A major portion of the workshop centered around the 2007 PaLA Conference. Soon you will be getting emails soliciting program proposals. I encourage all of you to consider a program for the conference. There is SO MUCH TALENT OUT THERE! We just need to share it! Start thinking about what you would like to share with your collegues this fall.

I would very much like to hold continuing education workshops in various places around the state this spring. If your library would like to host one of these, please email me: kalchthaleri@einetwork.net or comment on here. We're looking for locations to host a 1/2 day workshop. I'm hoping to have them in the western, middle and eastern parts of the state. Let me know if you are interested and/or able to host such an event.
